What gauge of shotgun should I bring?
A)
My favourite Shot gun for the Northern Plains is a 16 Gauge double gun with 28 inch barrels, chocked Improved Cylinder and Improved Modified, having said that, 12 down thru 20 gauges are fine and I have seen some folks due wonders with a 28 gauge, but I have seen a lot of cripples when using 28 & .410 guns.

Q) How many and what load of shotgun shells should I bring?
A)
You are allowed to bring 200 shells into Canada, shells are also available here. My preference in loads (all around) is a Game Bore 2 ½ inch # 6 which is a North American # 7, or what I will do is load a #8 followed by a 71/2 or 6, I only shot 1 oz loads out of my 12 and 16 gauge guns, and 7/8 oz. out of my 20.

Q) Can we use lead shot on waterfowl?
A) No, you have to use non-toxic shot, our favourites are Kent's IMPACT Tungsten Matrix or Remington's Hevi Shot.

Q) Can we use our dogs?
A)
Yes! And you can run them with ours providing they are broke or at the same level of training and experience re. we don't run un-broke dogs with broke dogs. The hazards your dog(s) face are, skunks, porcupines, badgers, cactus, the odd rattle snake, dehydration and if we are hunting close to the mountains then Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Mountain Lions and the occasional Hill Billy. If you have more than one dog, you will be asked to provide ground transportation to the hunting areas etc.

Q) Do you book single hunters?
A) Yes, please call us for details. Toll Free: 1-800-453-3991

Q) Where exactly do you hunt?
A)
Our Outfitting Licenses allow us to hunt in both Southern Alberta and South Western Saskatchewan, which allows us to move around and keep our clients in fresh Birds and ALL of our hunting takes place on private land.

Do I need separate licenses for both provinces?
A) Yes

^

Q) What can we expect to see for covey numbers?
A)
The average covey count over the last 7 years has been 15, depending on the day, scenting conditions etc. it can be lower, the most covey's I have seen in one day is 24. Sharptail numbers can also vary year to year, but in good sharptail habitat numbers can be very good to excellent and it can be not uncommon to see 100 birds per day,as for pheasants, Alberta has some very good habitat, however you are at the top of their range so you will see fewer Pheasants than in North Dakota but the birds you will see will be very big and extremely challenging.

^

Q) Will you keep the birds I shot?
A)
Absolutely NOT, you are responsible for the birds you kill, you are required to take them home with you, we will NOT ditch birds for you etc. we will look after processing or cleaning, so please bring a suitable cooler with you for your birds.

^

Q) Can I stay longer than 3 days?
A)
Yes, we encourage you to take advantage of our outfitting privileges in both Provinces, which will allow you to depart with 2 possession limits.

^

Q) I heard it was difficult to get guns into Canada?
A)
Actually it is not, especially if you do the paper work before hand and present it to Canada Customs in triplicate when you arrive, this is downloadable from this link:

Q) What is the benefit of booking a trip with you?
A)
We feel that we offer discriminating wingshooters what they want, walk up shoots over pointing dogs, hence because we are also avid bird hunters, all our dogs are extremely well trained and spend an average of 250 days in the field, we are also the first guide service on the Canadian Prairie to employ pointing dogs, which if you want to see a lot of coveys is the preferred dog of the prairies for our main quarry (Huns & Sharptails). We also keep our hunts and lodges to a minimum number of 4-6 hunters and no mixed parties , in the field we limit the guide to client ratio to 2 clients per guide, thus ensuring that the experience that you have paid for is the best, we will consider 3 man parties but only two hunters are shooting. This is not our first Rodeo, we have been guiding and operating Outfitting services for both wing shooting and Fly-fishing for a long time, we know what you want, how to handle any problems, and how to have fun while in the field, bottom-line is that know else in our area can come close to our knowledge, level of service and dedication to the pursuits we offer, and yes there are some guide services and lodges that are less expensive, but you get what you pay for ! Please examine our program you will see that our rates are extremely competitive and great value for your dollar, and last but not least we REALLY want you to come back!

Q) When is the best time to come up?
A)

Gray PartridgeSaskatchewan Bird Hunting Outfitters
Our season starts September 15th and we run until the 1st week of November, during this time we are ensuring our coveys and coverts are well rested between hunts (our average covert is visited 2 times during the season ) on our days off guess what we are doing ? looking for new coverts, our goal is to always be showing our guests fresh birds, furthermore, there is minimal local pressure.

Q) What is the weather like?
A)
In September and early October daytime temperature can be quite warm, cooling off in the evenings, towards and into mid to late October, the days can be on the Cool side (32-55 degrees) with cool evenings .Precipitation is usually minimal however and has been known to snow or rain, which usually means great waterfowling and okay upland hunting.
